“Babe that looks like you got that from Dillards or Macy’s or something LOL”.  Words spoken by my husband. That is the highest compliment you can pay a sewist, that their work looks like its store bought.

That brings me to my latest make the Mimi G Simplicity Pattern S9186. I first saw this pattern on the OG Mimi G and I said WOW, but didn’t think it was for me. Eventually Sew Your View was having their challenge for November and the Mimi G Coat was the pattern of the month.  I decided I would love to participate and see how I could add my own touch to the coat. I had tried to buy the pattern on sale but couldn’t find it in stores. Eventually I gave up and went and bought it at full price from Walmart. Face palm..That hurt because I refuse to buy patterns at full price but oh well.

This was my version of the coat. It is my very first coat and I really struggled with the collar mostly because I was not following directions, but I just need a bit more practice and I’ll get it.

Don’t mind my little assistant model who insists on being in my pictures..dressed up to go nowhere LOL

Pattern Review

Pattern Description: Misses’ single breasted coat & jacket with puffed sleeves & ribbed knit. Intermediate sewing. Great project to up your beginner sewing skills

Pattern Sizing: I chose size 14 to lessen on bulk

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?  The outline of the pattern looked the same, but my modifications added my unique touch

Were the instructions easy to follow? wooo I struggle with reading patterns and struggled with this one but I did find her video very helpful. You can find it here

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the sleeves but also did not like that it was elbow length. I modified the sleeve to be longer and lower puff

Fabric Used: I used a suiting/ Coating fabric from hobby lobby for the coat and a stretch velvet for the facing and cuffs. Here are similar options Wool Blend Tweed, Cashmere Blend Camel , Wool Blend Magenta … Velvet Black

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:  I lengthened the puff sleeve to about 3/4 sleeve and shortened the cuff. I also opted to leave out the front button and back belt but added a belt instead.

Would you sew it again? I think I will to get a bit more practice in.
